WE ARE LOOKING FOR A CREATIVE WRITING FELLOW FOR 2023-24

Job Description

Tyne and Esk Writers currently have seven Writing Groups and one Poetry Group, spread in locations between Penicuik and Dunbar. The Creative Writing Fellow will visit all groups in accordance with a schedule worked out between the CWF and T & E Writers. The task of the CWF is:

(a) To encourage members of the groups in their writing (and often to chair meetings attended, and lead group discussion, give creative writing prompts etc).

(b) To give critical feedback to individuals on their work as requested, and as allowed by the hours worked.

(c)  To give feedback to the Management Committee of T & E Writers and attend committee meetings (every few months) if possible.

Conditions of Service

This position is for a period of six months, in two periods, from September to November 2023 and March to May 2024. Hours of work will average 10 hours weekly, and evening duties will feature in the schedule. This will be followed by a review, and there is the possibility of a second year’s employment.

A stipend of £700 per month is payable on receipt of monthly invoices.  The post holder is responsible for their own tax, National Insurance and pension arrangements.

Reasonable out of pocket expenses (e.g. telephone call charges) will be reimbursed on the presentation of receipts or a reasonable written statement.

Preferably the post holder will have a current driving licence, and their own car. Travel expenses at 45p a mile will be paid. For someone living outside Edinburgh, Midlothian or East Lothian, the point where duty journeys start and finish will have to be negotiated. Otherwise the cost of Public Transport will be refunded.

Termination of the appointment on either side will require one month’s notice.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A track record of publication
  • Expertise in understanding and helping with poetry as well as prose
  • Ability to work with beginners as well as those further on
